Cooling Tower Rehab

Repair

Project Description

PED CONCEPTS was selected to perform facility support rehabilitation and upgrade to three cooling towers on top of the Martin Luther King, Jr Federal Court House in Newark, NJ. Because was an active U.S. Court House all employees and subcontractors were screened and given clearances. The utmost care and caution was given to scheduling so as to not disturb the proceedings of the court. The two largest towers had fallen into disrepair and had not been used in years. The third and smallest cooling tower was the workhorse that was doing the lion’s share of the work. After removing the existing fill, we power washed, sanded, and grinded out all of the rust spots as well as applied patches where the metal was weakest. The cold water basins were then covered in a two-part protective coating system. We then installed new, high-efficient fill that was elevated so that the building engineers can have easy access to clean the bottom of the cold water basins. The nozzles from the hot water basins were changed out as well.

The motors, gearboxes, as well as electric heater panels of the two largest cooling towers, were also replaced with new equipment. Once the towers were rebuilt we conducted vibration testing to ensure that the towers were not only functioning correctly but that they would be balanced correctly so as to not create noise and movement that could disturb the building’s tenants.
